You know, I think if I were a more dedicated person, I would probably be a writer. However, I can’t sit still long enough to write a book. Photography allows me to keep moving and create a story through images rather than words.

Q: Speaking of history, let’s learn a bit about yours. How did your photography journey start?

Daniel Rannoch: Oh man, I’ve had a crazy route to photography. I think actually quite a lot of my photography colleagues have taken similar paths. We didn’t really know what we wanted to do, and then photography kind of fell into our laps. It was just, I guess, the one thing we hadn’t tried among all the other things. But yeah, I mean, I’ve always been creative. I used to be in a band when I was younger and toured around the UK for three or four years, just playing in a rock band in the ’90s.

Q: How nervous were you the first few times going up to random people and trying to generate a conversation?

Daniel Rannoch: I’d say there’s a healthy amount of arrogance and bravado in my personality. I try to keep it in check. But the powerful thing I found about photography is that this camera is a mask; I can hold it up in front of my face and become a different person. If I don’t have my camera with me—or back in the earlier days, certainly, if I didn’t have my camera with me—I would find it difficult to just walk up to somebody and have a conversation.

Q: How do you stay inspired? Especially when you’re delivering high quality results and you have to keep doing it.

Daniel Rannoch: Surround yourself with people who inspire you, people that you want to elevate yourself to or aspire to be like. I recognize that I’m an accomplished photographer and can photograph a wedding fairly effortlessly. I understand the process now, but I also recognize that this is a massive danger because that’s when you stagnate and stop growing.
