In this week’s interview, I talk to my colleague Krystal Kenney, an American photographer living in Paris. When she moved to Paris from the US, she didn’t speak French and wasn’t sure if she’d be able to make a living there. Fortunately, her fear was a huge advantage in disguise!

Today, Krystal has a very successful wedding and portrait photography business.

Starting a photography business takes a lot of time and effort. If you don’t have the right guidance, you might end up discouraged and uninspired. As someone who has dealt with many obstacles, Krystal knows how important it is to have a mentor. This is why she created the course for starting a photography business, which will give you all the tips and tricks you need to thrive as a business owner.

Krystal and I talk about:

  • The inspiration behind it
  • What the course will teach
  • Why it’s perfect for hobbyists and professional photographers alike

& much more!

It’s a fun and informative resource for anyone who wants to learn more about business or take their existing business to the next level. Make sure to check it out today!

Here is a preview of our conversation with Krystal Kenney.

Q: Is there anything you wish you had known about business before you got started?

Krystal Kenney: In the beginning, I had no confidence. I thought, “Why would anybody hire me?” I didn’t even want to talk about my business. It was kind of embarrassing. I felt like I wasn’t worthy.

Having resources and knowledge really gives you the confidence to talk about your business and yourself. A lot of times, creative people from any background, and even more so women, have a hard time talking about themselves and their work because they feel like they’re not humble. It’s not about that. It’s about providing a resource for people that they want and need.

Q: What was it like to create it?

Krystal Kenney: This is a course I’ve wanted to create for a really long time, just because I’ve been a photographer for over 15 years now. I’ve learned a lot of things along the way that maybe I wish I would have known before I started.

This is something that’s been rattling around in my brain. It was really great to finally put it down, write something, get the course together, and come up with ideas. It’s easy because it’s things that I’ve been doing for so long that I tell other people all the time, but now it’s all in one place where they can easily access it and take their time to learn it.

The market is full of courses, and there are a lot of great ones out there. You have choices! What makes this course a little different is just the fact that I am American but I moved my business abroad to Paris. I think a lot of people are dreaming of traveling for their job for doing photography, so I can help people figure that part out too.

Q: Is there anything specific that inspired you?

Krystal Kenney: When I meet a lot of people and I take pictures of them, they often tell me that I’m living their dream life. They also want to be full-time photographers living in Paris. For them, it feels impossible.

This course is really for those people. It’s for people who are feeling a little lost. They’re dabbling in photography but they don’t feel confident enough to quit their day job. This is a course for which you won’t need to quit your day job, but you can get that ball rolling and get started. Then, you can see for yourself if you can turn it into a profitable full-time job.
