Eugene Theron’s story is one of transformation, passion, and boundless curiosity. From his background in geology to becoming a full-time nature photographer, Eugene has blended his scientific fascination with the natural world into an artistic career that captures the beauty and mystery of landscapes.

Based in the dramatic surroundings of Snowdonia National Park, Eugene’s work is deeply imaginative, weaving together his technical expertise and an almost painterly approach to photography.

His recent project, “Small Worlds,” exemplifies this spirit, showcasing intimate, nature-inspired scenes that demand a closer look—both at what lies beneath our feet and the stories these elements can tell.

Alongside his own creative pursuits, Eugene is dedicated to teaching others, encouraging them to not only master techniques but to connect with their surroundings and cultivate their own photographic voice.

Here are three key takeaways from our conversation:

  • Eugene’s geology background informs every frame, allowing him to capture landscapes with depth, meaning, and an unparalleled understanding of the Earth’s processes.
  • Eugene’s philosophy revolves around sparking curiosity—both his own and others—to unlock new ways of interpreting the natural world.
  • Through his workshops, Eugene creates spaces for photographers to explore their individual styles while offering collaborative learning experiences that expand creative possibilities.

Get ready to be inspired by Eugene Theron’s passion for photography, his relentless curiosity, and his ability to uncover both the grandeur and the subtle details of nature. This episode will leave you with a newfound respect for the landscapes around you and the creativity they can inspire. Enjoy!

Q: If you could magically transport yourself to any location in the world right now, just to photograph a composition you’ve never really attempted, where would it be?

Eugene Theron: There’s some parts of the Himalayas I’d love to go to. The Tinshan Mountains in northern Kazakhstan in Mongolia, the Gobi Desert fascinates me, places like that. Also some parts of Africa as well, like Namibia, where I’ve just come back from a few months ago.

Q: How do you decide kind of what story to tell in your photographs?

Eugene Theron: I don’t really make a conscious decision to do one thing. My thought process basically revolves around picking a location and basing it on whether I think the conditions will be OK, and then going out and just seeing what happens.

Q: What do you think or what unique elements do you think collaboration brings to teaching photography to others?

Eugene Theron: By collaborating with someone like Shona on a workshop, we present people with options on how to improve and harness their own creativity. It opens up so many more options to a workshop participant, offering different perspectives and expanding their creative possibilities.
