When I first started picking up my camera, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I loved taking photos, but when I was experimenting with concert photography, product photography, etc., I didn’t feel like it resonated with me. It didn’t feel like my thing. As I discovered conceptual photography and realised that it was something I wanted to do, it felt really gratifying to be able to understand myself.

In this episode, I speak with Rhiannon K, a Malaysian conceptual photographer with an impressively creative portfolio. She was Malaysia’s first and youngest appointed Canon EOS Youth Ambassador, a title that allowed her to experiment with different photography genres and take her skills to the next level.

We talk about:
– Self portrait photography techniques
– What it was like working for Canon as an ambassador
– Tips for photographers who want to get better at networking and finding connections

& much more!

I’ve been following Rhiannon’s work for a while, so I was very happy to speak with her about photography and look at the world from her unique point of view. If you’re interested in photography as a creative art form, you’ll definitely enjoy listening to our conversation.

Here is a preview of our conversation with Rhiannon K.

Q: What does fine art photography and conceptual photography mean to you?

Rhiannon K: For me, it’s beyond just capturing images. Fine art and conceptual photography resemble creating a moment instead of capturing it.

I have a hard time appreciating just capturing images as it is because I want to be part of it as much as possible. I like to think about elements included in the storyline that I can create and start from scratch. That’s why I lean more towards fine art conceptual photography rather than maybe street photography. Different people have different interests.

For me, it’s really creating everything from scratch. Kind of like a storyteller, but using my images.

Q: What is your process for coming up with ideas like?

Rhiannon K: I create what I feel, but it comes and goes. I’m a very organised kind of person, so I like to plan. I wish I could do it whenever I can, but I like to sit down and think about what I want my image to tell, the story that I want to emit, and the expression that I want to dive into.

It takes a lot of planning for me. I like to write poems, if I can, to make me understand myself a little bit more and to add more depth into my images.

Q: Do you have any tips for photographers on social media who want to improve their networking skills?

Rhiannon K: Try to be more out there. I know it’s easier said than done. I’m actually quite an introverted person.

As I went along with the industry and mingled around with friends and met people who are working with brands like Canon, everything moved naturally. For me, it started off because I joined a Canon EOS Ambassador program where I competed to win the title. From then on, I just found my way around meeting new people, meeting brands, and it just snowballed from there. If there’s an opportunity that comes knocking to your door, just grab it. Don’t think twice, just do it.
