Daniel Wright, an experienced freelance photographer and content creator, is a key contributor to the Great Big Photography World community. In episode 201, we explore his journey—from his initial fascination with old photos to his flourishing career capturing the beauty of the natural world and beyond.
Throughout our chat, Daniel shared his transition from a hobbyist in the Air Force to a respected figure in the stock photography industry. Despite the challenges of maintaining technical quality and navigating the competitive landscape, Daniel’s passion for capturing authentic, natural beauty has kept him grounded. His work, especially with wildlife, speaks volumes of the resilience and raw elegance of shorebirds and nature.
An interesting facet of Daniel’s career is his role as an educator. Writing articles for Great Big Photography World has not only enriched his knowledge but also allowed him to share valuable insights with others. This dual role of photographer and contributor has shaped his perspective, specifically, the power of experiential learning.
After years of writing articles for the same platform, it was a pleasure to finally get to know Daniel, and I am sure you will find him just as engaging.

Q: How has freelancing been fruitful for you over the years, and how has it changed since you started
Daniel Wright: Freelancing has changed in terms of income. It started as a hobby, then I began making some money, but most of my income comes from other sources. It’s never been a full-time job for me.
Q: What got you into photography initially? Can you describe your first experience with a camera?
Daniel Wright: I was fascinated by old photographs and realized anyone could take pictures. I bought a Pentax camera duty-free while stationed overseas in the Air Force, and it started as a hobby, capturing scenes to share with others.
Q: How did you transition from stock imagery to writing educational articles for Great Big Photography World?
Daniel Wright: I began writing by researching topics, reading other articles, and simplifying technical information for readers. Writing about specific subjects like the histogram helps me learn and grow as a photographer.
