In this episode, I speak with Anas Cherur, a commercial and advertising photographer in Dubai. Anas has been taking commercial photos for over 10 years. His clients include Colgate, BBC Discovery, and many other reputable companies. Anas has a very relaxed approach to photography, prioritising good communication and high-quality work.

We talk about:

  • What it’s like starting a photography business in Dubai
  • How to network effectively
  • Advertising photography tips

& much more!

Anas has a background in graphic design, which allows him to look at photography from a unique perspective. He also has a love for cinematography, which we discuss in detail during this conversation. If you’re interested in any of these topics, you’ll enjoy listening to this episode!

Here is a preview of our conversation with Anas Cherur.

Q: Do you have any special tips for photographers who don’t have a background in graphic design?

Anas Cherur: Graphic design always helps to keep it simple and clean. When you keep it all simple and clean, your ornaments and clothes stand out.

I try to keep my images very minimal. That comes from my graphic design background.

Q: How can an understanding of cinematography improve a photographer’s work?

Anas Cherur: Cinema teaches you composition. For example Lawrence of Arabia is full of desert, but each frame is an art. It’s beautiful. This is what good photography and good cinematography is for me.

Take any Hollywood classic movies. You’ll learn a lot from them, especially lighting and the way they frame darkness. Just watch one movie and you’ll learn a lot.

Q: What advice would you give to people who want to pursue advertising photography?

Anas Cherur: Let’s say you’re shooting an editorial, so 8-10 pages for a magazine. You don’t have a lot of time in that 8-hour slot.

In advertising photography, we’re creating a maximum of 6-8 images in those 8 hours. You get lots of time with advertising photography, so that always helps.

I think in advertising photography, the hardest thing is to get the job. Once you get the job, executing is not that tough, in my opinion.
