Frank and Annewiek Doorhof’s story is one of reinvention, passion, and creative synergy—partners in both life and art who have transformed their shared interests into a thriving photography career. From building a successful computer business together to discovering their true calling behind the camera, their path has been as unpredictable as it is fruitful.

Rooted in their love for creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit, their transition into photography wasn’t just a career move; it was a leap into a life driven by passion. For Frank, photography began as a way to clear his mind, a hobby that quickly blossomed into a career of bold lighting techniques, exceptional teaching, and connecting with others. And for Annewiek, her steady presence behind the scenes—as an organizer, mentor, and creative force—has been pivotal. Together, they have balanced their strengths to create Studio FD, a space that blends artistry with education in the ever-changing word of photography.

Here are three key takeaways from our conversation:

  • A Bold Transition: Frank and Annewiek’s shift from managing a successful computer business to pursuing photography full-time highlights the courage required to follow your passion against all odds.
  • Teaching with Purpose: Their workshops reflect a philosophy that values curiosity over rigidity, emphasizing improvisation and technical mastery as the cornerstones of creative growth.
  • Creative Synergy and Entrepreneurship: By combining each of their distinct strengths, they’ve built Studio FD into both a hub for artistry and a platform for mentoring others.

Get ready to be inspired by Frank and Annewiek’s extraordinary blend of creativity, resilience, and shared vision. Their story proves that following your passion and staying open to new opportunities can lead to incredible success. I expect to hear more from then in the future. Enjoy the episode!

Q: How was the transition from running a computer business to all of a sudden focusing completely on photography?

Frank Doorhof: For me, it was a lifesaver. The computer company would have totally burned me out. The switch was easy because I love creating and helping people. It felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. Initially, it was hard because it was a big change, but after a few months, we were incredibly happy.

Q: What are your future plans in terms of going forward? Do you have any new exciting workshops or collaborations that you can talk about?

Annewiek Doorhof: We are always looking for collaborations. Recently, we were on a show with Sigma lenses, and Frank offered to do a New York tour. We have ideas for digital classroom sponsorships. We’re always thinking and exploring new opportunities.

Q: What led you to become so passionate about sharing your knowledge with others?

Frank Doorhof: When I grew up, I loved playing guitar and learned from American magazines. People heard me play and asked if I taught. I started teaching guitar and realized there’s a huge difference in how people learn. I wanted to teach the basics, like what I learned from Dean Collins, and focus on techniques. It’s about understanding the basics and then being creative.
