A wedding photo by Janet Howard

From the distant world of software to the heartfelt realm of wedding photography, Janet Howard has carved a unique path that spans two decades. Her photographic journey is not just a transition from tech to art but also a story of finding authenticity and emotion in every image she captures. Janet’s story is one of resilience and deep passion, as she navigates the world of both photography and business.

Janet’s work focuses on the art of storytelling, looking to showcase genuine emotions and experiences that connect us all. Her expertise extends beyond photography; she is a published author and a certified transformation coach, using her knowledge to guide aspiring photographers through their own creative journeys. Her book, ‘The Photographer’s Business Guide,’ serves as a starting point for those looking to balance the art and the business of photography.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Janet’s reflections on celebrating 20 years in the photography industry and the pivotal moments that shaped her career.
  • Her transition from a tech background to a flourishing photography business and the lessons learned along the way.
  • The impact of her mentoring and coaching efforts in nurturing the next generation of photographers.

My conversation with Janet offered a much needed look at how embracing change and prioritizing authenticity can lead to a rewarding career in photography. Her dedication to capturing real emotions and her commitment to education and mentorship resonated deeply with me and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with her.

Enjoy the episode 🙂

Q: First things first, this is a huge year for you, 20 years as a photography business and you also published a book, am I correct?

Janet Howard: That is correct, yeah. I honestly can’t believe it’s been 20 years. I feel like especially when you’re doing weddings, time passes so quickly because you’re always looking forward to the next thing.

Q: How did you start out as a photographer? Where did this kind of begin in your head as an interest and then evolve from there?

Janet Howard: I always loved photography and… I honestly never thought that it was possible to make a career out of it. It wasn’t until the startup that I was working for at the time folded and I was like, you know what, I’m going to give this a go.

Q: What advice would you give someone if they were looking to get into the realm of photographing high-profile celebrities or getting published in magazine such as yourself?

Janet Howard: I think the more important thing is to have kind of a giving spirit in working with other vendors and other people in the industry. If you have a spirit of giving and being willing to share of yourself and your images and your time with people who are also good at what they do, then eventually you sort of all grow together.
