I enjoy giving people their photos knowing that I put my heart in it. I just imagine, maybe, they’ll appreciate them when the time comes where they want to reflect on them later.

Thomas Dean is an international photographer who has lived in many places around the world. In his travels, he has photographed for companies such as Coca-Cola, the National Guard, and even past presidents! Tom manages to weather this hectic lifestyle by practicing yoga and mindfulness. This combination has turned him into a creative titan, ready to take on any challenge. Tom’s repertoire spans over 21 photography genres, and his journey often finds him on the road for several weeks.
In this episode, Thomas and I talk about:
- How practicing yoga has helped his photography
- His beginnings in tilings and how his selective mindset transferred over to photography
- As long as you’re doing what you love, you’ll never run out of energy
& much more!
Tom and I quickly became friends during this conversation and previous ones. He is a really cool guy who is doing nothing but trying to share his love of photography with the world. I would expect future episodes from him!
Here is a brief look into my interview with Tom.
Q: How do you manage such a “go go go” lifestyle while supporting your energy levels?
Tom Dean: It’s the philosophy of life. You’ll never hear me say I’m tired, it’s just not in my vocabulary. I mean, I woke up today at 3:30am and was like “what’s the point in going back to bed” and just started my day instead.
Q: Can you give me an idea of your creative process being a fast-paced photographer?
Tom Dean: I’m going to talk a bit about my tiling experience to give you an idea. Whenever I was doing a marble shower or whatnot, I would hand-pick the tiles from the warehouse. I wouldn’t pick out the boxes from the store; I would go to the warehouse, flip through the tiles, and choose them as I thought they should be. More so, how they wanted to be. There was almost a conversation between me and the marble. Instead of telling it what I want, I let it show me. It made it easy to do my job. So, while I may have a look to my photography, I have a style, but an acute style. I ask the photo the question; I don’t tell it. It’s more about a feeling than what it’s supposed to look like.
Q: Do you photograph your day to day life?
Thomas Dean: No, not so much. I’m not a social media guy in terms of broadcasting my life. If it’s something I find fascinating, then maybe. You can say that I don’t have time for that, if I can say that. I’m working with this client and I’m focused on them 100%, afterwards, I’m off to the next.
Where Can You Find Tom?
Take Away
Overall this was an enlightening conversation about how you can still manage a very busy photographic life while also taking care of yourself and your clients. Tom is definitely an inspireation and I can’t wait to see more work from him!
