Here is a preview of our conversation with David Victory.
Q: What advice would you give to people who are interested in improving their fashion photos?
David Victory: “Don’t try to be a fashion photographer” is what I tell everybody. It’s the toughest nut to crack in the photography world. It’s much easier to be a pet photographer, landscape photographer, or medical photographer for the city of LA than to shoot fashion as a business.
You have to shoot everything manual. Manual ISO, and manual shutter speed. I even use flash when I’m shooting daylights outdoors. That’s one thing I do all the time. Shoot everything manual.
Have a really good wide-angle lens. You’ll get a lot more mileage in fashion with a good wide-angle zoom than any other lens.
Q: How can fashion photographers find success?
David Victory: Fashion photography becomes your wife. You’re married to it. You don’t have a boss, and nobody hires you as a 9-5 fashion photographer. It’s your business, your life, and your passion. Forget about the wife and forget about the marriage. Don’t get married if you want to be a fashion photographer.
It’s just one bus and that bus is full. Trying to squeeze yourself to the top of the Google search results is going to be an impossibility. Back in 2014. I was on page 16 of Google, and now I’m on page one. You can’t be in the business but not be on page one, so it’s a bus that’s full. Page one is full.
Q: Are there any genres you’d like to pursue in the future?
David Victory: I have a love of arts. I love to shoot artistic things that I want to create.
